Creating a healthy, collaborative and productive working environment
According to ONS in 2022, 38% of working adults reported having worked from home at some point during the last 7 days, however many still see the benefits of working from an office, with 60% of workers feeling less connected to colleagues while working from home (CIPD). With this in mind it’s important for employers to consider how they can provide the best workspace to enable their employees to work healthily, collaboratively and productively both at home and in the workplace as more staff decide to return to office working in some capacity.
Where to start?
Display Screen Equipment (DSE) Assessments
If workers use display screen equipment (DSE) daily, as part of their normal work, continuously for an hour or more, employers must do a workstation assessment. By law employers need to undertake regular workstation risk assessments to ensure their employees are working in safety and comfort. With more than 1 in 4 people in the UK suffering with eye strain (27%), a stiff neck (27%), sore back (26%) or headaches (25%), justification for the EU Directive 90/270/EEC to undertake these assessments is more than evident. (Fellowes ‘New Way of Working’ Survey 2021).
Easily avoidable problems can be identified and prevented with the introduction of new working practices and solutions for each individuals’ workspace; whether this be ensuring that screens are positioned at the correct height with a monitor arm to reduce neck strain, encouraging good posture with a back or foot support or reducing wrist injuries with a wrist support.
Beyond physical health
While the physical benefits of undertaking a review of employee workstations is clear for us to see, it’s also important to understand how the introduction of solutions such as monitor arms can help improve productivity, encourage collaboration and enhance the aesthetics of the working environment in the form of a more functional and elegant look.
Monitor arms can instantly free up desk space, enabling the user to easily align the monitor to the most comfortable viewing position, a particular advantage for workplaces that encourage hot desking, where multiple users need to quickly adjust settings in line with their needs on a daily basis.
These solutions can also facilitate collaboration and productivity, especially when using two screens to share and discuss ideas, helping employees feel more connected to their colleagues.
